International Food Festival Held October 10

Friends and members of Christ Community gathered for our Sixth Annual Food Festival on Oct. 10, in the gymnasium at Calvary Church in West Hartford.  The Missions Team and Wini Baker coordinated more than 25 booths where families prepared and served foods representing various cultures and countries.  A judges panel bestowed best costume honors to the Bassett family for their Dutch theme, best table and food to Ray and Nancy Monkley for their Swedish faire, and first runner up on table and food to the Kinkys on their German theme. Rev. Roland Barnes, PCA pastor in Georgia and longtime friend of Al Baker, shared about his work in Peru and exhorted us to share in the Great Commission.  Very special thanks to all who shared in this wonderful evening.  Click here for wonderful photos of the Festival!

Preaching Class to Prepare Men for Pulpit Supply Preaching

Pastor Allen Baker is leading a class to prepare men for the task of pulpit supply preaching on the fourth Sat. of each month at 7-8:30 a.m. at the home of Jim and Carolyn Hasson, 10 Winged Foot Boulevard, Bloomfield.  The group launched last fall and is working through Martyn Lloyd-Jones' book, Preaching and Preachers, during this challenging, inspiring and informing time.  Please contact Pastor Baker (via email) if you would like to attend.

The class will help you understand the theology behind preaching and the practical aspects of sermon construction and delivery.  Our hope is
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
to inspire men, within and beyond Christ Community, to take up preaching, either as laymen through our efforts in New England Congregational Churches, or perhaps even as a full-time vocation.
Fesival of Nine Lessons and Carols to be Presented December 6 in West Hartford

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Advent Service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7:00 p.m. at the West Hartford Town Hall Auditorium, 50 South Main Street.  The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine Bible readings, and in the singing of Christmas carols and hymns.  The format was developed in 1880 by Edward Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, and presented as Nine Lessons in Cambridge starting in 1918.  Please bring a dessert to share, invite your friends and family, and join us for this very special Christmas tradition.

Donate Gift Bags to North End Children's Ministry

Bless the children served by our Bible Club in Hartford's North End at their Christmas party on Wed., December 16.  Select the name of a child on the resource table starting November 29, shop for the items on the list, place them in a gift bag, and bring the bag on December 13, to the worship service.  Please call Carolyn Hasson at (860) 216-5724 if you have any questions.  Thank you for caring.

We will also be collecting items for guests of Hartford Rescue Mission; stay tuned for details.

Evangelism Team Meeting Scheduled for Dec. 6

The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few, so consider joining Christ Community's Evangelism Team.  Its next meeting is Sunday, Dec. 6, following the worship service.  The team is looking for those with a burden for evangelism, and with spiritual gifts of administration and hospitality.  Please email Stoddard Lane-Reticker if you have any questions.

Pastor Baker Guest on NYC Radio Program

Pastor Al Baker was a guest on WNYG 1440 AM's hour-long call-in talk show, Iron Sharpens Iron, on October 21, talking with host Chris Arnzen about his heart for revival across New England, America and the world.  Al appeared again on the program on October 23, on a panel with two other pastors from Long Island.  To hear both programs, visit WNYG's website.

Women's Bible Study on 1 and 2 Peter Meeting Monday Morning and Evening

A Women's Bible Study meets Mondays at 9:30 a.m. at Carolyn Hasson's home in Bloomfield and at 7:00 p.m. at Liane Smith's home in West Hartford.  The groups are doing an inductive Biblical study by John MacArthur on 1 and 2 Peter titled, "Courage in Times of Trouble," and developing spiritual disciplines to encourage participants in their Christian walk.  Come for dessert, fellowship and a time to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.  Call Carolyn Hasson at 860.216.5724.

New Book by Pastor Al Baker Released this Summer by Wipf and Stock Publishers

Seeking a Revival Culture: Essays on Fortifying an Anemic Church, the new book by Rev. Allen Baker, has been released by Resource Publications, a division of Wipf and Stock.  The 164-page paperback contains 52 freshly-edited devotionals on the subject of revival living based on Al's weekly devotional, Forget None of His Benefits, which is distributed to more than 1,000 subscribers.  In his review, Dr. Henry Krabbendam, professor emeritus of Covenant College, says of the book, "Al Baker targets a revival culture by means of revival living prompted by a burden for an anemic Church and a hunger to see it return to revival vigor."  For more information or to purchase for $19.95 (+ 6% sales tax for CT residents), visit the Seeking a Revival Culture website or stop by the Resource Table (checks, debit/credit cards and cash accepted; exact change please).  Al will donate all proceeds after expenses to foreign missions.

Volunteers Needed for Hartford North End Ministry ... How About You?

Our Children's Bible Club ministry in Hartford's North End has begun for this autumn.  We are serving about 25 children every Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Hartford Rescue Mission, 41 Mather St.  We need more helping hands to assist the children, hold them and share the love of Jesus with them.  If you are interested in joining this wonderful ministry, please see Carolyn Hasson or Judy Schultz.

Consider Joining One of Our Community Groups

Our Community Groups are the primary way we cultivate Christian community at Christ Community.  Community Groups are places of mutual love, holistic care, and spiritual friendship where we pursue an authentic Christianity together.  Whether you’re at the church for the first time or have been around for a while, we encourage you to become involved with a Community Group — because we learn to know God deeper and grow in faith in relationship with others.  When a Community Group meets, it usually involves spending time together (sometimes sharing a meal or dessert), spiritual discussion, and prayer.  If you are interested in Community Group involvement or have questions, please contact Jarrett Allebach at jarrett.allebach@christcpc.org, or click here to view our church calendar.

Get Connected ... through Covenant Groups and Bible Studies

Our vast array of weekly small groups for prayer, study and mutual discipleship are essential to the life of our church.  All adult men and women are encouraged to connect with a group.  Meeting times and towns for these groups are posted on our church calendar (click here).  Men who are interested in joining a group should call Al Baker at 748.5918; women should call Wini Baker at 313.1412.
